The number of women studying and teaching science and engineering subjects has grown since 1960. The facilities and teaching programmes at both Queen Mary College and Westfield College expanded with advances in research and technology.

Westfield students pictured above conducted research in the new chemistry laboratory, which was opened as part of the new science building. The new Faculty of Science was completed and opened in 1965.

Westfield's offerings in the Sciences continued to increase over the years, and the new area of Computing emerged from 1971.

From 1973, Westfield's Botany Department became known as Botany and Biochemistry, to reflect more accurately the main interests of the Department. In the same year, staff, students and alumni joined Ellen Delf-Smith in celebrating her ninetieth birthday. More...
