At both Queen Mary and Westfield Colleges, Botany remained a popular and thriving subject. Female academics, including Maud Godward at Queen Mary College, continued to advance teaching and research in that subject area.

There were also increasing opportunities opening to women students across many subject areas, including the sciences. At QMC's Physics Department, research was carried out under difficult circumstances in a temporary laboratory in basement (below, left), pending the rebuilding of the department.

The Draper’s Company sponsored scholarships for women and men (above, right). Women were offered scholarships and exhibitions in Science and Arts subjects, but not Engineering.
