The Women at Queen Mary Project ran during the 2007/08 academic year and aimed
to:
- raise consciousness of the history of Queen Mary and its constituent
colleges among students, staff and the wider community;
- contribute to QM's aim of widening access to higher education by
encouraging applications from different communities both locally and
nationally;
- contribute to fundraising initiatives, particularly in relation to
scholarships, through raising the College's profile while also showing
the impact of higher education for those who enter first from their
communities.
The Project included a range of events, which collectively aimed to
explore the challenges, dilemmas and opportunities for women from
different generations and different communities entering higher
education for the first time. It also sought to draw parallels between different
groups of women for whom the entry into education was unexpected and in
some sense disruptive of wider assumptions about the social and cultural
role of women.
A key objective of the Project was to communicate to new generations of
students and staff something of Queen Mary’s identity and mission, and
to explore and celebrate the contribution of women to the four Colleges
that underpin the modern institution: Queen Mary College, Westfield
College, St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, and The London
Hospital Medical College.
