Pamela Matthews (née Saunders O'Mahoney) was born in 1914 and educated at St Paul's Girls' School. She studied at the London School of Economics, earning a first class degree in Economics c1935. She married Peter Matthews in 1938.
She had a long and active professional life and gained considerable experience of public affairs, before becoming Principal of Westfield College in 1962.
Between 1938 and 1943, she worked for the Royal Institution of International Affairs, the Foreign Office and The Economist. She then worked for Reuters from 1945 until 1961, and was later an Independent member of the Advertising Standards Authority.
She was Principal of Westfield College from 1962 until 1965, a period when major new policies were being implemented at the College. These included development of the new Science Faculty, and the decision to admit men to the College.
