Rosalind Hill (1908–1997) was born in Chester and read history at St Hilda’s
College, Oxford, graduating with a first-class degree in 1931.
She was lecturer,
and later professor, of Medieval History at Westfield College from 1937-1976.
From 1968 to 1983, she chaired the
Canterbury and York Society, which was devoted to the publishing of bishops'
registers and other medieval ecclesiastical records. She was secretary
(1963–73) and then president (1973–74) of the Ecclesiastical History Society.
She collaborated with the cartoonist Fougasse in producing Both Small and
Great Beasts (1953) for the University Federation for Animal Welfare, combining
her love of animals with her love of the middle ages.
In her farewell lecture marking her retirement in 1976, she recalled her time at Westfield and her work as a researcher and teacher, which included the period of evacuation to Oxford during WWII. The recording and transcript of this lecture is held in the College Archives.
